The Planning Commission takes the city’s first crack at reviewing a plan to build a 136-room hotel, 38 townhomes and 10,000 square feet of commercial space

The San Juan Capistrano Planning Commission got their first look at a proposal to build a 136-room hotel and residential enclave in the heart of downtown, and their message to the developer was clear: It’s just too much.

“When I first heard about the project, I was excited. It was the revitalization of downtown,” Commissioner Sheldon Cohen said. “But I think what we’ve been presented with tonight is way overbuilt.”

Irvine-based development company Urban Village is proposing to build the hotel and 38 single-family, three-story townhomes, along with over 10,000 square feet of commercial space, on a 3.1-acre property, located off Camino Capistrano and Forster Street, just behind the Egan House and south of Historic Town Center Park.

After reviewing the initial site plan and conceptual drawings, commissioners said there were too many elements in the project. Among their concerns included a lack of parking for residents’ visitors—currently only eight spaces, the minimum required by the Historic Town Center Master Plan for a residential area of its size—and the hotel’s location behind homes, at the south end of the project area.

“The hotel is buried. If you talk to a hotel operator, there’s no way they’d have the thing there,” Commissioner Robert Williams said. “That hotel needs to be brought out toward the park.”

Equipping our mobile gadgetry with anything other than visual and touch sensory features has proven to be something of a challenge, even for the most innovative hardware makers. But now a Japanese firm has unveiled a new device that could finally open up the world of smartphones to yet another sense: smell.

The Scentee is an attachment that connects to the iPhone and delivers specific smells that can be associated with emails and text messages. For instance, you can send a “relaxing” smell to a friend who you know is tired. In addition to messaging, the company also envisions the device being used as a way to enhance gaming, and to push that effort they are releasing an SDK for game developers looking to include olfactory bells and whistles to their mobile games.

At present, the device attaches to the iPhone’s docking port, but another version, scheduled for release in September, will connect the device to the headphone jack. The company also plans to offer a version of the Scentee for Android devices in the near future. You can see the Scentee in action in the video below.

At last, there’s a smartphone accessory that will notify you of
new texts or calls using smells.

The Scentee, made by Japanese firm ChatPerf, plugs into the iPhone’s
docking connector (it’s not Lightning compatible yet, though, so
bad luck iPhone 5 owners) and can connect with apps to emit scents
on command. ChatPerf’s website describes it, somewhat
disconcertingly, as “for girls, for lovers, for children, for
events — find it by your sense of smell”.

Before you begin eagerly texting your dearest friends farts,
though, it’s not quite that flexible — each “scent tank” contains
one fragrance, and the phone’s user will have to swap them for
different odours. When the scent comes through, a red light comes
on and a spray of mist comes out.

A ChatPerf representative, interviewed by DigInfo TV,
said: “For example, suppose you want to send a message to a friend
via social media, maybe because you know your friend is tired. You
can use this to send a relaxing scent along with your message. You
can also use it to add scent to the notification sound whenever you
get a new email.

Mal wieder verbirgt sich hinter einem unspektakulären und kryptischen Namen was Innovatives und Sensationelles: wie an verschiedenen Stellen berichtet wird, kommt mit dem AOC e2343Fi im nächsten Jahr einen Monitor auf den Markt, an den man unkompliziert sein iPhone andocken kann.
